As an instructor at Subiaco Academy, I am excited about the opportunities that the renovation of Alumni Hall brings for me to present concepts to students in a way that is more meaningful and realistic. Instead of just learning about scale factors, students can construct things to discover the changes to not only the dimensions of an object but all the impact that is had on things such as area and perimeter. While it will be wonderful to teach and learn in a modern space, the experiences that will be afforded students to explore, create, collaborate and interact with content as well as genuinely demonstrate their understanding is what I am most excited about. How does a student know that they are not interested in programming circuits if they have never been allowed to work with them in a real-world way, like building a television remote from scratch or creating an app to control a robot?

The transformation of Alumni Hall into a state-of-the-art STEAM building has greatly enhanced our ability as instructors to provide the boys with a more hands-on and collaborative learning experience. The addition of a robotics room, a maker space, and new spaces for students to collaborate on projects with their peers provides students with a true one-of-a-kind educational experience here at Subiaco Academy. We have not only transformed Alumni Hall, but we have also transformed our daily schedule to allow for large time blocks so that students and faculty have ample time to discuss, explore, develop, and create a deeper more meaningful understanding of the concepts being presented. This new STEAM building enables us as instructors to make the transition from a more teacher-centered approach to a more student-centered approach of educating the students of today and tomorrow.

The downstairs makerspace in Alumni Hall is a room of creative possibilities. I appreciate the opportunity to expand my creative skills and familiarize myself with the future of digital art.

The new renovations help students get into a more relaxed and comfortable state of mind, which helps when learning difficult subjects, such as Composition, Chemistry, and Calculus.

The renovations of the Main Building and Alumni Hall have helped Subiaco advance the focus of student-centered learning for many generations that follow me.
