SUBIACO INTRUDER DRILLS MONDAY: In 1901 and 1927, Subiaco suffered devastating fires. The campus learned from those tragedies and continually conducted fire drills since then. We have done the same for tornadoes and storm drills, but also for nuclear drills during the Cold War when our Church basement was designated a nuclear bomb shelter. On January 25, 2023, our campus had an active intruder who would initially interact with our students and later would desecrate and destroy our Church altar. Through generous donations and grants from the State of Arkansas, we have sought to address future intruders through effective locks, campus-wide ID badges, safety cameras, a sex offender notification system for visitors, external room labels to easily direct emergency services, safety training programs for all, and a dedicated team of fourteen commissioned school security officers that are trained to handle minor to more severe emergencies until law enforcement and EMS arrive. Through it all, Sheriff Massey and the Logan County Sheriff's Office (LCSO) have partnered with us to ensure the safety of all who are involved at Subiaco. Sheriff Massey and Chief Deputy Joshua Scott conducted training with a ‘Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events’ (C.R.A.S.E.) class, and Logan County Office of Emergency Management Director Tobi Miller has also worked with us. We have now moved to our Active Intruder Drills to prepare our entire campus. On Monday, August 26th, Subiaco will work with the LCSO and our CERT members to conduct Active Intruder Drills. The morning drill will be in our Academy between 8:25 AM and 11:00 AM. The afternoon drill will be in our Church with the monks and begin at 12:45 pm. Please do not enter any building marked “Do Not Enter – Training In Progress.” We want to thank Sheriff Massey and his officers for their ongoing support in protecting our campus which is a home to students, faculty, staff, employees, a monastic community, retreatants, and thousands of tourists who visit us each year. We pray that we never have to use the skills we learn from these drills, but we will be prepared should something unfortunate befall us. UIOGD!
