At each evening meal in the monastic refectory one of the monks reads for the assembled monastic community a brief biographical sketch of monks whose anniversary of death is upcoming. Anniversaries of two monks from Center Ridge, Arkansas were noted during mid-January. Br. Tobas DeSalvo, OSB, died January 18, 2009; his uncle Fr. Christopher Paladino, OSB, died January 22, 1972. Both graduated from Subiaco Academy. Both were active in various Subiaco Abbey ministries. Br. Tobias taught driver education and religion at Subiaco Academy and was a dean in Heard Hall for 23 years; he also served as vineyard caretaker, vintner, mechanic, maintenance director, bus driver, herdsman, Marriage Encounter helper, missionary in Belize, and counselor for various youth programs.
Fr. Christopher served as an Academy teacher and prefect for many years before embarking on careers in parochial work in Texas and in Arkansas. His other contributions to the Abbey’s ministries included serving as the business manager (during which time Coury House, Heard Hall, Rebsamen Stadium, and Oskar Rust Gymnasium were built), subprior, and founder of Camp Subiaco.
These two serve as inspiration to all of us at the Abbey. They truly exemplified our motto “Ora et Labora.”
