GUADALUPE PROJECT: Last summer, Abbot Elijah assigned Fr. Reginald and Br. José to a Marian project for our campus. The plan was to find a place where we might develop an area to honor "Our Lady of Guadalupe" who is known as the "Patroness to the Americas." For decades our ... We are blessed to have a wonderful quilting group of artisans with us this weekend at our retreat center. Monasteries of women and men have been famed for their monastic cultivation of cloth skills as found in numerous medieval tapestries. American quilters follow the same tradition of needlecraft and we are honored to host this fine group of artisans. The group's name is "Stitchin' Addiction" and they have been hard at work Stitchin and Praying in the midst of our VERY cold weather! For that we monks chant: UIOGD!
Br. Raban Heyer will be ordained to Priesthood in the Presbyteral Order on Friday, November 22, 2024, at the Abbey Church of St. Benedict at 10:00 am. You are invited to this wonderful celebration and the reception afterwards.

SUBIACO INTRUDER DRILLS MONDAY: In 1901 and 1927, Subiaco suffered devastating fires. The campus learned from those tragedies and continually conducted fire drills since then. We have done the same for tornadoes and storm drills, but also for nuclear drills during the Cold War when our Church basement was designated a nuclear bomb shelter. On January 25, 2023, our campus had an active intruder who would... (click the title to read more).
80 YEARS: Today (Saturday) we celebrate the 80th birthday of Fr. Mark Stengel (pictured right). Tomorrow (Sunday), we celebrate the 80th birthday of Br. Adrian Strobel (pictured left). They agreed to allow us to take a photo in front of our foundation cross from 1878 when our monastery was founded. We give thanks to God for their years of faithful monastic service and persevering in their vows. They remain two of our hardest working monks in ministry. They are also proud graduates of our Subiaco Academy from the class of 1962. Happy Birthday & Ad Multos Annos!!! For that we monks chant: UIOGD!
PAROCHIAL MINISTRY: The primary ministry of our abbey is prayer--communal and private. We have also decided to focus our secondary ministry efforts on three areas: EDUCATION (our internationally famous all-boys day and boarding Subiaco Academy); HOSPITALITY (our Coury Guest House and Retreat Center); and PARISHES. We undertake our parochial outreach through sending out our... (Click on the title to read more)
MONASTIC CLONING: Several of our monks are being cloned... or at least their profiles are! So, we have been removing information from our abbey website that might allow people to easily clone us. Our Necrology is now offline, our Abbey Message archives are removed but the current issue remains, and data on our Monk Profiles have been removed. If there is ever any question about a monk contacting you for money, then just give our abbey a call. We are grateful to all those that let us know of these scams.
Graduación: Brother Sebastian completed his summer assignment in introductory Spanish and Hispanic culture at the Mexican American Catholic College in San Antonio, TX. He will soon be returning to St. John's in Collegeville, MN, to start his second year of his four-year seminary program for priesthood. He is photographed here with his classmates and instructors. For a person that does not like beans, he was able to still survive the cuisine and graduate. For that we monks chant: UIOGD!
Br. Sebastian has been assigned for the summer to the MACC (Mexican American Catholic College) in San Antonio to get his first immersion in the Spanish language and its many cultures. He is pictured here in class and at Mass as a lector. Brother just finished his first year at St. John's School of Theology and Seminary in Collegeville, MN. He will have three more years of studies and summer assignments before his ordination to priesthood.

Today our Subiaco family said goodbye to Chris Adams who has been with us for 14 and a half years. In addition to being our Master Plumber in the Maintenance Department and an Emergency Response Team member, he is just a joyous presence to all his Subiaco colleagues over the years. Dedication and commitment are his middle name (not to mention 'Mad Dog'), and we have been... (click the title above for the full story)
BONNY, OUR SONGBIRD: One of the gifts of Benedictine hospitality we give our diocese is assigning our priests to fill in for weekend assignments at various parishes throughout the state. This allows the parish priests of the diocese to go on vacation, to conferences, and funerals while allowing our monastic priests to talk about our Abbey and monastic life. Fr. Patrick and Abbot Elijah recently went to.... (click title above for the full story)
SALT & PEPPER: A number of years ago, Fr. Elijah (before he became our Abbot) participated in a vocation program in Hot Springs where he talked about monastic life with Sr. Mary Clare (before she became Mother Mary Clare, the Prioress of Holy Angels in Jonesboro) and Sr. Gloria. One of the students at the program remarked (click on the title for more...)

Br. Roch was able to celebrate Holy Week at Sant'Anselmo in Rome where he is undertaking a 3-month training program in Benedictine formation. Br. Raban was at Glenstal Abbey in Ireland for Holy Week undertaking his canonical retreat required for his future ordination to priesthood. Br Raban and Br Roch climbed the tower at Sant'Anselmo to snap this photo a few weeks ago to let us know that they are alive and well. For that we monks chant: UIOGD!
DIVINE OPTIONS: We were honored to have Bishop Taylor with us for Confirmation. If you might be called by God to the apostolic life of a diocesan priest working primarily in parishes, then call Fr. Jeff Hebert (Vocation Director for our Diocese of Little Rock; Phone: (501) 664-0340, ext. 331). If you might be called to the contemplative life of monasticism and prayer with ministries in education and hospitality, then contact us!
